Celebrating Success

Hello and welcome to Ash Class!

Our Teacher is Mr. Currie!

Our Teaching Assistants are Miss Steele and Mrs Roberts!

As we are in Year 5, we are expected to be good role models to the rest of the school. We always put our best effort into our work and we enjoy our exciting and fun lessons!

This term our topic will be 'Ainsdale on Sea'!

As Historians, we will be looking at our local area and how Ainsdale and Southport has changed over time as well as finding out how Ainsdale go its name. We will look into the Mexico lifeboat disaster. We will also be looking at the Victorian era and producing a Victorian timeline, finding out how children's lives are different now from then and finding out about important figures such as Dr Barnado.

As geographers, we will be locating Ainsdale on a map and finding out how far away it is from other places in the UK. We will use ordnance survey maps to identify local landmarks and give directions. We will compare the weather of Ainsdale to that of other seaside resorts across the world. We will understand why tourism is important to Southport and looking at the features of coasts. We will study the impact of flooding and the course of River Alt as well as looking at animals in the local area such as the natterjack toad and the red squirrel.

As artists, we will look at the work of Richard Long, Robert Smithson and Richard Shilling and create transitional art using natural and found materials.

As design technologists, we will be looking at the design of toys from the Victorian period as well as designing our own. We will also be making a Victorian tea including scones, canapes and Victoria sponge cake.

As musicians, we will listen to and appraise the Coronation March and how this music fits to the occasion. We will also be using Charanga to develop our sense of rhythm and beat.

As computing experts, we will be using the internet to carry out research into the local area. We will be creating a game on the Hour of Code as well as using 2PublishPlus to create a leaflet advertising Southport. We will also create our own quizzes using 2Quiz.

As mathematicians, we will be finding out distances between Ainsdale and cities of the UK. We will be looking at the differences in temperatures between Ainsdale and other seaside resorts.

As writers, we will be reading ‘Street Child' and writing diary entries in the role of characters. We will write a recount of life in the workhouse and a story about living in the Victorian times. We will write a report about the Mexican Lifeboat disaster and also write about the process of the water cycle. We will write a letter of persuasion for or against the railways being built in the Victorian period.

As scientists, we will continue to look at forces, including water resistance and friction. We will then study light, looking at light travelling in straight lines, how we see and reflection. We will then study Animals including humans, looking at the changes as humans develop to old age.
