Sefton Juniors Play for Merseyside
It was a bright spring morning as five sefton junior players asembled at Sacred Heart school in Liverpool to travell to Sheffield to play for Merseyside in the English Primary School Chess Association Under 11 regional championships.
For the five players: David De La Morena and Kate Marshall from St William Of York school, Maria Datcu and Lydia Whitehouse from Bishop David Sheppard school and Harry Pollock from Kings Meadow school, this was the first time that they had represented their county.
Twenty three players from schools across Merseyside comprised the team managed by Charles Daniels the Head of Sacred Heart School, and coached by John Gorman and Bob Clark from Chess in Schools and Communities.
When the chess began the players acquitted themselves very well, but found the going tough, Harry and Kate both managed to win a game and the other players fought hard but the step up in standard from school to county level proved difficult to bridge. However all the children enjoyed the day and it was great to see new friendships being made on the coach and during a lunch time football match.
This was a great first for the Sefton children and it is hoped that as Chess coaching continues in the Sefton schools more children will follow them into the Merseyside team.
