Girls' Football Tournament Winners!

This afternoon, girls from Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in the Year 5 and 6 Southport Girls' Football Tournament.

There were 12 teams in total and we were placed in a group alongside St Jeromes, Churchtown and Our Lady of Lourdes B.

The first game, against St Jeromes, was a tough game but the girls fought hard and won 1-0.

The second game, against Our Lady of Lourdes B, was a fantastic attacking performance, cruising to an 8-0 victory.

The final group game was against Churchtown and we knew a draw or a win would see us into the semi-final. We took the lead before Churchtown pegged it back to 1-1. Within about 30 seconds though we re-took the lead and held on to win 2-1. Through to the semis!

We were drawn against Our Lady of Compassion in the semi-final, a tough opposition. We attacked and attacked but couldn't break them down, until Paige unleashed a wicked shot right into the top corner. The girls defended well and held on to the 1-0 win. Into the final!

We found out we would be playing St Jeromes again as they had qualified for the semi as best second place team, and beat Our Lady of Lourdes in their semi. St Jeromes had revenge on their mind and they took an early lead as a shot took a wicked deflection into our net. We dominated the rest of game, and, just as it looked like it was going to be one of those games, we scored an equaliser. Into Extra Time!

We knew we were the favourites to win, having beaten them in the group stages, but it needed everyone to play their best. The keeper put the ball down to take a kick and, thinking sharply, Paige nipped in to slot the ball home! 2-1! The next minute and a half seemed like an hour and a half, but the girls held on superbly and the final whistle went. Unbelievable scenes! The girls shook hands with the opposition before collecting their winners' medals!

A superb effort by every girl. A wonderful team. Well done to Lily JL, Leah M, Gracie B, Paige L, Ellie P and Paige PD!
